The Vita Flex Technique

There are many sources on the internet for information on this technique. The following description is from www.beinginbalanceinc.com:

Vita Flex Technique - Meaning “vitality through the reflexes” this technique was perfected in the 1960s by Stanley Burroughs who researched the ancient Tibetan technique and introduced it to the west before acupuncture was popular in the States. It is based on a complete network of reflex points that stimulate all the internal body systems. Essential oils are applied to contact points and energy is released through electrical impulses created by contact between the fingertips and reflex points. This electrical charge follows the nerve pathways to a break or block in the electrical circuit usually caused by toxins, damaged tissues, or loss of oxygen. Unlike the steady stimulation of Reflexology, Vita Flex uses a rolling and releasing motion using the fingertips on the hands and feet to affect the nervous system and all internal organs.
The exact method as described on the Health Essentials Info website is excerpted here:

How to Perform the Vita-Flex Technique:

For the most effective application of therapeutic-grade essential oils, use the Vita-Flex Technique. Here are the basics of this wonderful healing modality.
  • Select the essential oil(s) most appropriate for your needs. (The Essential Oils Desk Reference is the ideal tool for this.)
  • Put 3-6 drops (or more) in the palm of your non-dominant hand, and with the fingers of your dominant hand, stir the oils in a clockwise direction at least three times.

Then, with the essential oil you have chosen on the finger tips,
  • Place the pads of the fingers beside the reflexology points to be worked.
  • Roll up onto the finger tips, applying slightly more pressure at the top of the roll. At this position, energy is "fired" into the reflexology points being worked, somewhat analogous to a spark plug firing in a gas engine. Then …
  • Continue to roll the fingers over onto the nails. This breaks the circuit, essentially sealing the energy in, so that it can travel throughout the recipient's body.
  • Release by rolling the fingers back to the starting position.

This action should be performed at least three times. If you are working a larger area (like the spine points or the colon points in the instep of the feet — see the diagram below), move up about a finger-width after each roll; but return and perform the action to the whole area at least three times.

Doing the Vita-Flex Technique on other parts of the body

While the Vita-Flex Technique is most generally performed on the feet, it can also be used to great effect on almost any other part of the body.

Using the Associated Points: One very effective way to use the Vita-Flex Technique is to use it to apply therapeutic-grade essential oils to the Associated Points along the spine. (The Essential Oils Desk Reference includes a chart of these points, for your reference.) These are the points at which the nerves branch out to the various organs of the body, and are also associated with the meridians governing these organs. By applying the oils to these points, using Vita-Flex, you can speed the benefits of the oils along the electrical impulses of the nerve pathways.

I find the method with the thumbs described above for the spine to be quite awkward. Using the fingertips, more like described and pictured for the feet, is very adaptable for back as well. While standing at the head, I start with the fingertips laying flat along each side of the spine and pointing inward, or toward each other. Then I alternate the technique between the two hands, rolling one hand toward the other, so the knuckles of one hand just about touch the nails of the other. This left-to-right, right-to-left action is repeated three times in each position, while advancing up the spine a hand-width at a time.

As used in the Essential Harmonic Enhancement Technique (EHET), including the self-application technique (EHET/SA) this modified technique is still as effective, as long as the motion starts with the pads of the fingertips or thumbs, and rolls over onto the fingernails, then continues forward till the nails break contact before rolling back to the pads. Because the fingernails are electrically insulating and the skin is conductive, the electrical impulsing is generated by this make/break contact action of rolling from one to the other. Besides the inherent electrical energies in our bodies, the pulsing may also be generated by action of a piezoelectric effect.
(There are some good books on the body's electrical aspect and its important link in health and well-being. The Body Electric by Robert Becker and Gary Seldenand and Energy Medicine by James Oschman are a couple you may want to check out.)
